Somtum Der’s Northeastern (Isan) Thai recipes are brought to Tokyo with the opening of Somtum Der’s 2 branches at Somtum Der Yoyogi, the first floor of Yoyogi Matsui Building, easily access from Yoyogi Station and Somtum Der Toranomon, at Toranomon Hills Business Tower Yokocho. It is time for people of Tokyo to be indulged with Isan experience that goes beyond food.

Somtum Der Tokyo holds on to its original concept, similar with other branches, to offer authentic regional Thai cuisine to fill one’s stomach and in the same time extends to the whole indulgence of every sense through Isan lifestyle.

Somtum Der Bangkok was first founded in 2012 by Thanaruek Laoraovirodge, Thai restaurateur, whose desire is to share the originality of regional cuisine from his hometown, Khon Kaen province of Thailand. He describes Somtum Der as a place “where real local recipes are available in a differentiated ambience.” The brand’s genuine spirit of Isan is reflected in every bit. Starting from the name of the restaurant, der is a common suffix widely used in Isan region. It indicates a warm invitation, which in the same time can be informative.

In 2014 Somtum Der journeyed to New York City and introduced original taste of Isan food to New Yorkers and visitors. There, the restaurant is awarded one star by Michelin, French tire company, and is listed in Michelin Guide New York City 2016, only one year after its opening. Closer to home, Somtum Der also opened its branch in Ho Chi Minh City in 2016 and Beijing branch was just opened earlier this year. Vibrant metropolitan is where Somtum Der targets as the people is ready for the boldness of Isan food as part of their lifestyle. And of course, Tokyo is the perfect destination. This time, Thanaruek collaborates with Japanese restaurant entrepreneur, Daisuke Osada, the owner of Nagiya Group with restaurants in Japan and Bangkok.

The extensive menu at Somtum Der Tokyo includes variety of somtum (papaya salad), spicy salads, grilled meats, deep-fried dishes, soups, rice dishes and noodles. The team carefully selects Somtum Der Bangkok’s popular dishes which were invented by Chef Korn, Somtum Der’s Michelin one-starred 2016 chef and one of the founders. Chef Korn also oversees every process at every branch and make sure that the quality is consistent and Somtum Der’s standard is met.

Items available ranged from tum thai kai khem (spicy Thai papaya salad with salted egg), moo rong hai der (Somtum Der’s signature grilled pork), tom saep kradook aon (spicy soup with pork gristles), sapok gai tod Der (Der’s style deep-fried chicken), larb moo (spicy minced pork salad with green vegetables and chili) and many more of Isan’s well-liked dishes.

All-time-favorite Thai rice and noodles like Der’s Padthai, khaopad tom yum goong (fried rice with tomyum paste), khaona kraprao Kai (Steamed rice over fried holy basil with minched chicken) and pad see eiw moo (stir fried flour noodle with sweet soy sauce and pork) are also on the list, tempting every hungry soul to visit Somtum Der Tokyo.
